The usual ritual for Penangite coming back home for holidays – to que for deliciously prepared Nasi Kandar dish as breakfast.

In a glance, it is just a plain white rice served with one or two (or more!) protein of your choice such as beef, chicken, fish, egg, squid, prawn or crab.

‘Decorated’ with locally known ‘bendi’ (ladyfingers), steamed the whole plate then flushed with generously amount of ‘kuah campur’ (mixed of curry gravies) and only then it is ready to be served.

There are various Nasi Kandar spots in Penang Island, each has its unique taste, special dish and their own diehard fans.

Among top ones are Ali Amier (in Jelutong) and Kampung Melayu (in Air Itam).

The Nasi Kandar craze has now spread nationwide. Many of them operate on 24-hours mode.

Hanging out in Nasi Kandar outlets are considered as cool and trendy in cities like Kuala Lumpur.

Regardless, the best Nasi Kandar is always here, in Penang, where it all started.
